How to Master the Impossible: A Satirical Self-Help Guidebook for Humans Who Have Tried Everything.
This book began, like most self-help books probably should, with failure — the ordinary, private sort that looks like competence from the outside and feels, from the inside, like living next to a small, relentless emergency. It's an honest, funny, and unflinching inventory of the impossible tasks we quietly assign ourselves and then blame ourselves for never completing.
Each chapter takes one of those impossible assignments and follows it to the point where the logic begins to hurt more than it helps: staying completely in control, changing the past, reading minds, being everywhere at once, finding closure, never being hurt again, always being right, making people change, and being loved unconditionally. None of them can be done — and yet every one feels, at three in the morning, like something you absolutely must finish before you can rest.
This is not a manual. There are no numbered steps, no acronyms for mugs, no promise to make you calm, successful, or finally above the mess. Instead it names what you were already doing in language clear enough to see the cost of continuing exactly as you are, is impolite about things that hurt you but are sold back to you as virtues, and leaves you with questions usable in a kitchen on a Tuesday rather than only in a workshop.
Satire is the vehicle — not because your life is a joke, but because humour is sometimes the only way to get close to the truth without flinching. If you find yourself laughing and wincing in the same paragraph, the book is doing its job.
You will not finish this and become unhurtable. If anything goes well, you'll end slightly more suspicious of your own most exhausting impulses, and slightly more interested in living a real, finite, ordinary life than in winning the unwinnable game. That would be enough.
Written by Sam Dalton, drawing on four decades in high-risk environments — military, commercial diving, drilling and offshore safety — where mistakes cost more than embarrassment, and where systems fail exactly where people are pretending they're fine.
